£6m events business for Excel

The European Conference on Optical Communications in 2013 and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) in 2014, are among major conference business worth £6m confirmed for ICC London Excel, which opens in May.

Coupled with delegate spend, the wins are expected to generate an estimated £50m economic boost for the capital, an independent study by Grant Thornton putting the figure at £1.6bn by 2011.

“The number and quality of events that we’re attracting clearly illustrates why London needed an international convention centre,” James Rees, director of conferences and events at Excel, said. “We are relishing the opportunity to play a key part in completing London’s business tourism product.”
